Soweto Theatre

In telling the story of how the Soweto Theatre came to be built, we must begin with the decision of the South African Government to bid to host the Soccer World Cup in 2010. Across the country people began to imagine what the legacy of this event would be. Such a conversation took place in 2007 under the leadership of the previous Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Cllr Amos Masondo. Out of this discussion the Mayoral Committee was persuaded to support the Executive Mayor’s proposal that a Theatre should be built in Soweto.
With this mandate, officials in the Johannesburg Property Company and the Department of Community Development began a 6 year journey which culminated in the opening of the world-class Soweto Theatre, a vibrant, active and exciting cultural venue, on the 25th May 2012.
The theatre has been built in a zone of public space within the high density, mixed-use Jabulani CBD. It will be a multipurpose performing arts centre, for theatre productions, dance, music, film and community gatherings. Known as the “cultural heart” of the suburb, it includes the existing Jabulani Amphitheatre, parkland, public art and other amenities. Residents of Soweto as well as the greater Johannesburg and surrounds will be able to enjoy professional local and international productions.
“The theatre will be designed in accordance with principles of Universal Design and environmental sustainability…..Most simply; Universal Design is human-centered design with everything and everyone in mind. The theatre is committed to being a fully accessible venue. All three stages will be wheelchair accessible”.
Soweto Theatre welcomes you!
