Via Katlehong / South Africa

Borrowing their name from Katlehong, one of the most populous and poorest townships of South Africa, this group is representative of traditional urban cultures. The origin behind the pantsula (a kind of mime of popular life) and the gum boot (a dance in minors’ boots) or indeed the tap (striking the ground or different body parts). Not forgetting all the traditional dances (almost as many as there are different languages) and, of course, those in contemporary style. Mixing all these genres, the Via Katlehong dancers invited the young singer, actress, performer and choreographer Hlengiwe Lushaba and Siphiwe Nkosi, an actor and singer, to imagine this cabaret, the energy and inventiveness of which is typically South African. They tell us about daily life in the neighbourhoods, bars and clubs of Johannesburg. The vitality and virtuosity of the dancers are only matched by the onslaught of Nolwazi Ngidi, a true lead dancer with contagious energy.
