Panaibra Gabriel Canda (Time and space: The Marrabenta Solos)
Panaibra Gabriel Canda (Time and space: The Marrabenta Solos)

Tuesday, October 2nd – 8.00 P.M. – Soweto Theatre – Red Theatre

Panaibra Gabriel Canda / CulturArte / Mozambique

Time and Space: The marrabenta solos deconstructs the idea of the African body, or even Africanness. It is choreographed to Marrabenta music, invented in the 1950’s and derived from European elements and instruments imported into Mozambique, combined with traditional music. In these solos, Panaibra Gabriel Canda calls into question all the ideas that the Mozambican body has absorbed in the course of its history: nationalism, socialism, communism, militarism and finally, individual freedom. Particularly important is the extraordinary inventiveness of movement in these solos which, although starting off from the same theme and from one single movement, will continue to diverge into many different variations, mutations, inversions, reversals. With no lack of humour, the connotations of the guitar of Portuguese origin are explored – sombre fados or latent cabaret, wild inhabitants of every continent or the international military. Panaibra Gabriel Canda crosses and transcends all these imposed stereotypes.
